7month salary backlog: student takes up cleaners job

 

Zion Hostel cleaners of the  university of jos has embarked on an indefinite strike action on Friday November 2023.


This action took all Zion hostel occupant by surprise as the dirty compound was left at the mercy of the students.


Speaking with the chief matron in charge of Zion hostel who pleaded anonymity , she said the reason for this strike action is due to lack of payment of the cleaners.She added that the school management are responsible for their payment.


According to her

"I can't tell when exactly the strike will be called off but the management are putting all in place to ensure the strike is called off, we hope it ends soon and the workers return to their post".


She further advised that the students should cooperate by coming out to clean their environment pending when the strike will be called off.


" we are all girls we should be doing what we know how to do and what we do at home"


She ended by commending the effort of the girls who came out on Saturday to ensure their environment is kept clean.


In an interview with one of the Zion hostel cleaner who won't say her name for security reasons.


She explained that the reason for the strike is due to lack of payment.

In her words, she said " we want to work but we can't continue working without payment, the month of October that ended made it  the 7th month of working without pay and we have to  transport ourselves to get to this place everyday, so we decided to stop working for the main time until the issue is resolved."

She added that she can't say for sure when the strike will be called off.

  In a chat with one of the Hostel senator in person of Tomilayo ,she  explained the reason for the strike action  

"The strike came up as a result of the withheld salaries of the workers, for some of the workers eight month while others seven months and their contract expired last month so they decided not to continue for this month until something is done about their salaries. She added that effort are made by student to see how to keet the Hostel clean

" we are trying to see how to clean the Hostel more than once  a week but this is difficult to achieve as  students are always going to class during the week  so weekend is the only time we can do this

we pray the the management do something about it because we can't continue like this".

    Also in interview with  zoe chindo  a 300 level student of History and international studies and an occupant of Zion hostel she said 

" I was surprised to be be called out to clean because this has never happened before but we were able to clean the hostel  together with other ladies we cleaned the toilet, bathroom and compound" 

she added that cleaning Hostel will only be convinent  for her during  weekends 

"I  am only available weekends because I have classes from Monday to Friday so cleaning the Hostel more than once won't be convenient for me so I really hope the management can look into this issue and address it as soon as possible".

Unijos V-C Honoured During Visit To Mass Communication Department, Commisssions New Studio and Library.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Ishaya Tanko, visited the Department of Mass Communication to commission its newly constructed studio and library.
